Many buyers confuse hot-dip galvanized wire with electro-galvanized wire (cold galvanized wire). Judging only by shiny surface may lead to early rusting outdoors, and rework cost is much higher than material cost. The anti-corrosion gap mainly comes from zinc coating thickness and bonding method.
Hot-dip galvanized wire (HDG wire) Steel wire is dipped into molten zinc at ~450°C. Metallurgical reaction forms zinc-iron alloy layers, tightly bonded to steel base and resistant to scraping. Zinc coating: 40–120 μm, zinc mass 40–200 g/㎡.
- Rural atmospheric environment: 20–50 years rust-free
- Light industrial area:10–20 years
- Coastal salt-spray area:5–12 years Applications: fencing, solar farm binding, orchard wire, slope engineering and other long-term outdoor projects.
Electro-galvanized wire (EG wire / cold galvanized wire) Zinc deposits electrochemically at room temperature. It is only physical adhesion without alloy layer. Zinc peels easily under bending or friction. Zinc coating:5–20 μm, zinc mass 8–25 g/㎡. Even with passivation treatment, corrosion resistance is limited.
- Dry indoor environment:5–10 years
- General open air: red rust may appear within 0.5–3 years
- Coastal high salt environment: rust within months Best for indoor binding, crafts, packing ties. Not recommended for permanent outdoor exposure.

Quick summary: In normal outdoor atmosphere, HDG wire lasts over 20 years, while EG wire usually fails within 3 years. The service life can differ by several times or even more than ten times, especially in coastal salt-spray zones.
How to tell them apart
- Surface: EG wire is bright silver; HDG wire is matte grey, sometimes with spangles.
- Touch: EG surface is smooth; HDG feels slightly rough.
- Inspection: Request zinc coating weight test certificate. Visual check alone is unreliable.
Note: Low-cost thin-coat HDG wire exists in market with poor corrosion resistance. Specify zinc coating weight in your order to avoid fraud (EG wire passed off as HDG).
Selection guide
✅ Outdoor projects, long service life, coastal/industrial area → Hot-dip galvanized wire ✅ Indoor packing, temporary binding, decoration, no rain exposure → Electro-galvanized wire
